Advanced Algebra & Trigonometry (AAT) is designed to keep students on a smooth and sensible math path as they progress towards more advanced levels.Â
The transition from algebra 1 to geometry to algebra 2 tends to be fairly smooth, especially with a well-structured curriculum. However, many students find the leap from algebra 2 to pre-calculus or college algebra to be particularly challenging and can experience frustration or failure with the sudden jump in intensity. The difficulty is often compounded by a variety of external factors -- what we refer to as “intangibles.” Â
What do we mean by “intangibles”?Â
Upper-level high school and college math courses often come with hidden challenges that go beyond the content itself. These intangibles may include a teacher who moves too quickly, is hard to follow, lacks experience, or doesn’t invest in whether students truly understand the material. In some cases, the curriculum itself may be poorly written, disorganized, or difficult to navigate -- especially if it is exclusively online.
For students enrolled in college-level courses, the format of the class may also pose challenges, such as infrequent meeting times and an accelerated pace compressed into a single semester. Additional factors like time management, motivation, conceptual understanding, and the ability to juggle academic and personal responsibilities can all influence a student’s success. Â
AAT is insurance against intangibles.
By taking AAT, students gain an extra year to grow academically and personally. They are able to solidify their algebra 1 and algebra 2 skills while also learning all of the key topics found in college algebra and pre-calculus (excluding calculus specific content). As a result, students are well prepared to thrive in future math courses, regardless of the intangible hurdles they face. It ensures the path from algebra 2 to the next upper-level course is smooth, upward-trending, and filled with peace.Â
