This is a standard algebra 1 course designed specifically to build a solid foundation for students who find themselves struggling with or behind in math but need to take (or retake) algebra 1.
What sets this Algebra 1 apart from other courses is that it was created with the struggling student in mind. It not only takes the essential algebra 1 topics and makes them easy to understand and easy to remember, but it also teaches students the habits and techniques they need to study upper level math. Essentially, they will learn how to learn math.
With this course, students will gain a solid algebra 1 foundation, setting them up for success in geometry, algebra 2, and beyond, while also reducing math anxiety and building confidence in their math ability.
Algebra 1 Course Includes:
1-year access to our comprehensive Algebra 1 teaching videos. These are short, to-the-point instructional videos covering all essential Algebra 1 topics. The course also includes access to the Solutions Library where every homework and test problem is worked out and explained on video.
Student Textbook & Solutions Manual
Our spiral bound student textbook is consumable, which allows students to easily follow along, take notes, and work problems exactly as they see them in the video lessons. This avoids the frustration of copy errors and makes handling and reading easier. The spiral bound solutions manual works out every single homework problem in detail so both students and parents can check work and accurately assess progress.
Chapter Tests & Solutions
This packet contains two versions of tests for each chapter (forms A and B), allowing a student to re-test if he or she needs further practice on concepts. The corresponding solutions manual works out each problem for each version of the test in detail. The 3-hole punch packet format allows parents, tutors, or teachers to easily disperse individual test forms as needed and accurately check work afterward.
The parent guide provides parents with all the information they need to successfully guide their student through Algebra 1, whether the student needs the parent to be fully hands on, mostly hands off, or somewhere in between. It provides pacing guides, grading suggestions, and grade recording pages.
How can I tell if Denison Algebra 1 is right for my student?
Denison Algebra 1 is designed specifically to help students who dislike, struggle with, stress out about, or simply don’t care for math. If your student dreads math, has completed a pre-algebra course but isn’t sure he or she “got it,” or if the student is at a point where he or she just needs to get through algebra 1, Denison Algebra 1 is right for you.
Is my student ready for Denison Algebra 1?
If your student can add, subtract, multiply, and divide regular numbers and has some experience with fractions, decimals, and percents, they are ready for this course. Even if they aren’t good at the previously mentioned skills, having some general experience with them is sufficient. If your student has taken pre-algebra (in any way, shape, or form), they are ready for this course. If your child is in 8th grade (or even 9th) and has time for a pre-algebra course, that would be recommended. However, pre-algebra is not required for Denison Algebra 1.
We also have aPlacement Testavailable to help you gauge if your student would be better suited in pre-algebra or algebra 1.
Should my student have taken pre-algebra?
Pre-algebra is designed to strengthen the arithmetic skills students learned in elementary and middle school, such as operations with numbers, decimals, fractions, and percents, etc. It also introduces students to beginning algebra concepts so they are not brand new when students see them in algebra 1. Denison Algebra 1 has been written assuming a student has either not had a good experience with pre-algebra, has forgotten most or all of what they learned in pre-algebra, or displays a great deal of reticence toward math in general. This course is also beneficial for students who really need to take algebra 1 but have not yet taken a pre-algebra course of any kind.
We also have a Placement Test available to help you determine if your student would benefit from taking Denison Pre-Algebra, however, as mentioned above pre-algebra is not a prerequisite for this course.
Is this course completely stand-alone?
Yes. This course is designed to take a struggling student through an entire algebra 1 course without the need for a tutor or additional instructor.
