Standard vs Success Courses

What's the Difference?

Our programs differ in terms of content and pacing, and are designed for different types of learners...

  • Standard courses are full, standard-level programs designed for the average, college-bound student.
  • Success courses are modified, remedial-level courses geared towards students with learning challenges that make processing math difficult.

How do I Choose?

We're math people at heart, so we've broken it down into steps...

  1. Read the program comparisons below. Be sure to click on the "Read More" buttons for the full details.
  2. Compare the pacing guides, free trials, and course previews of the Standard and Success version of a course (select a course from the Course Page to view these resources). This side-by-side look will give you a feel for the differences in content and pacing.

Standard

These are full, standard-level courses designed for the average college-bound (or trade school-bound) student. They contain all of the material found in a typical math course, but are taught in a brain-friendly way that fosters success and encourages retention. These courses work well for neuro-typical learners, whether they love math or hate it.

For students who...

  • Perform well (or okay) in other school subjects
  • Can sit through lessons and generally track with the material that is being presented
  • Can do multi-step math problems if they are explained well and are at an appropriate level for the student's understanding
  • May have math gaps, but not due to processing and learning challenges.

Success

These are modified, remedial-level courses for students who REALLY struggle with math, particularly due to learning challenges. They contain about 70% of the material found in an average math course, and are taught at a slow, bite-sized pace that introduces one concept at a time. These courses work well for neuro-divergent learners where math has come to a complete stand-still.

For students who...

  • Struggle with most school subjects and math in particular, due to learning challenges such as dyscalculia, dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADD, ADHD, autism (but not gifted in math), etc.
  • Are easily distracted during lessons and immediately forget what was just taught
  • Have difficulty working multi-step math problems
  • Have large gaps in their math knowledge and struggle to retain basic math concepts

Standard Courses

Our standard courses include Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Advanced Algebra & Trigonometry. These are full, standard-level courses that cover all the material typically found in a high school math class. They are not modified or simplified in any way, and are geared towards students who plan to attend college (or would like to keep that door open). Each course introduces and teaches concepts in a logical, brain-friendly way that makes upper-level math accessible, regardless of a student's past experience with the subject.

We've found that a majority of students are best suited by this program, even if they've struggled with math in the past.  This is because many staunch "I-hate-math-ers" dislike the subject due to external factors, such as poor curriculum, confusing teachers, or gaps in education (our Success program is aimed at students who struggle with math due to "internal" learning challenges). One way to gauge this difference is to analyze how your student performs in other academic areas. Do they typically do well in other subjects, but just not with math? Are they able to focus on lessons or follow multi-step instructions in other classes? If the answer is yes, our standard track is likely a good fit. Built-in review and reteaching ensures that students can catch up quickly, even if their math background has gaps or holes.

Standard courses are also ideal for students who feel neutral towards math or even enjoy it, but don't want an accelerated or honors-level curriculum. Many students thrive with the daily structure and logical flow of our courses, even if math comes naturally to them. While not honors level, our standard courses contain all essential math topics and provide students with a strong foundation for future study. By the time a student completes Algebra 2, and especially if they've taken Advanced Algebra & Trigonometry, they will be well prepared for college entrance exams (including the ACT and SAT), as well as freshman level college courses like pre-calculus, college algebra, or statistics.

Success Courses

Our Success courses include Success Algebra 1, Success Geometry, and Success Algebra 2. These are modified, remedial-level courses that contain about 70% of the material found in a typical math class. Lessons are taught at a much slower, bite-sized pace that introduces just one concept or step at a time. Lesson videos are typically 10-15 minutes long, and assignments are shortened significantly to account for short attention spans and difficulty focusing. A significant amount of review is included as well, with the assumption that students have forgotten most or all of what was covered in previous lessons and courses.

Our Success program is designed for students who really struggle with math, typically due to a processing or learning challenge. These challenges can be either suspected or diagnosed, and often include dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyslexia, ADD (but not gifted in math), autism (but not gifted in math), ADHD, and other similar neuro-divergent giftings. Students who thrive with Success courses often struggle in other areas of school as well, not just with math. School is often a significant stressor and math may have come to a complete stand-still with little-to-no progress being made.

In many cases, you know if you have Success student. While a majority of students are better suited by the standard route, you'll likely have a gut feeling that Success is best for your student. You need math to become "unstuck" and are desperate for your student to begin making forward progress, even if it's incremental. It's important to note that Success courses are not traditional “college prep” courses. They are modified by design. The goal is to help students move forward, making measurable progress, reducing anxiety, building confidence, and introducing abstract math in a clear, approachable way. With this foundation, students are better positioned to continue their education and have a real chance at success in future math classes.
